It was a great way for students to play around with materials and medium to find out which one they like to use. Depending on the grade it also refines those fine motor skills. I also think that reading the story along side the project was a great way to get all students involved. Sometimes using different "eye-catchers'" is a great way to get students to be actively involved. There are many other lessons that could have gone along with the dot and even many other skills!
Extension Activity:
A great extension acrtivity would be instead of laying the coffee filter on tin foil, lay it on a piece of thick water color specific paper. Then you can encourage the students to design the dot and draw outside the lines. When the dot is dried you could raise the coffee filter off of the paper and see that you have made two dots! One using the coffee filter and one using negative space on the paper! This activity goes great alongside the book as well.
