We started off by choosing a color or two of yarn that represented something in our life. We measured about 20 arm lenghts total of yarn to bring back to our desk. We were given carboard cups that had already had guide lines drawn. We then cut on the lines, making slits in the cup. We took our yarn weaving it in and out of the slits to make the finished project. We then had to write about what the colors meant to us. The teachers showed us good examples and bad examples of the cup to show us techniques that will and wont work.
You could integrate it with a history lesson on the American Flag or a litature lesson using the cat and the hat. Then use the corresponding colors and explain their meanings. Like for example, the American Flag represents Red: valor and bravery. White: purity and innocence. Blue: vigilance, perseverance, and justice.
